Freida McFadden, the thriller author behind The Housemaid, has revealed that her real name is Sara Cohen. Cohen said she is ready to end the secrecy after years of keeping her writing life separate from her hospital work, saying, “I’m at a point in my career when I’m tired of this being a secret.”
She also said she was done with the speculation around her identity. “I’m tired of people debating if I’m a real person or if I’m three men,” Cohen said, adding that, “I am a real person and I have a real identity and I don’t have anything to hide.”
The 45-year-old doctor, who treats brain disorders, said she first chose anonymity so readers would not connect her novels to the hospital job that supported her family. Cohen lives in Boston, Massachusetts, with her husband and two children, and said her colleagues eventually learned about the double life and were “really nice about it.” She added that she wore glasses and a wig in public because she had “no idea how to style my hair.”

The name behind the books matters because McFadden is not a minor success story but one of the biggest commercial names in popular fiction. She began publishing in 2013 with the self-released The Devil Wears Scrubs, wrote 27 novels and has sold tens of millions of copies worldwide across formats. The Housemaid became a major commercial hit in 2022, and last year it was adapted into a film starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried that grossed almost $400m worldwide.
That screen success has only raised the stakes for the next chapter.
