came back to with two all-new episodes, and the closing stretch of “” delivered the kind of twist that changes ’s mission overnight. In a sealed basement, and released the virus they have been building to wipe out all supes across the planet, and it hit immediately.

That matters because Soldier Boy was not supposed to be in the room as prey. had awoken him from his slumber and sent him out to track down Butcher and his vigilante gang. Instead, after Hughie and Frenchie sealed the rest of the doors and ran with the others, Soldier Boy sat up in the body bag he had been packed into, a jolt that turns the virus from a weapon into a problem the team may not be able to control.

The twist lands against a season that has already made a point of showing no one is safe. Episode 1 killed A-Train, a move that set the tone early and gave Season 5 its first major shock. Eric Kripke said he had to tell Jessie T. Usher not to lease an apartment in Toronto that year, and he said the writers argued that if the show was going to keep its promise, it had to take out someone big right away. They initially discussed holding A-Train until Episode 3, but instead chose to give him more story first, including scenes in which he goes to France, makes peace with his brother and hears that his mom is proud of him.

Kripke said that decision worked because A-Train had been running scared from Homelander since the end of last season, and the character finally stops running and faces him. He also said the team needed to make the page count work so A-Train could get his proper due, even if that meant an early exit. The result is a season opener that does more than shock: it closes one arc, then immediately opens another by making Soldier Boy’s return part of the same violent chain reaction.

For Butcher, the virus remains the center of the plan. For everyone else, the question is whether the weapon meant to end the supes has already made Soldier Boy even more dangerous than before.
