Rory McIlroy’s marriage to Erica Stoll is back in the spotlight after golf writer Alan Shipnuck revisited the couple’s brief divorce and reconciliation in a new book.
The timing matters because McIlroy, a five-time major champion, remains one of the sport’s most visible figures, and the book frames the episode as a revealing moment in his personal life rather than a footnote. McIlroy and Stoll met in 2012 at the Ryder Cup, when she was working for the PGA of America, and they did not go public with their relationship until 2015. Before that, McIlroy had been engaged to Caroline Wozniacki in December 2013, then ended that engagement about five months later.
McIlroy filed for divorce from Stoll in May 2024, saying the marriage was “irretrievably broken.” A few months later, the pair called off the split and said they had “realized that our best future was as a family together.” That turnaround is the center of Shipnuck’s account, which says the short-lived divorce proceedings and hasty reconciliation said more about McIlroy than Stoll.

Shipnuck also writes that it would have been unwise for an internationally famous athlete heading toward billionaire status to file for divorce unless he was one million percent certain there was no chance to save the marriage. He adds that McIlroy’s life has been defined by impetuousness, on the golf course and in business and romance, and says that recklessness is part of what makes him appealing.

The book also revisits earlier rumors about a possible relationship with CBS golf reporter Amanda Balionis, but people close to them said it never became romantic. For now, the public answer to is rory mcilroy still married is yes — and the reason the question keeps resurfacing is that McIlroy’s private life has become part of the story of his public one.
