The Asian needle ant is spreading farther across the United States, and its sting is getting more attention as the invasive insect turns up in more places. By the time of the article, it had been reported in Arkansas, Connecticut, Florida, Kentucky, Georgia, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New York and Tennessee.

The ant is slender, dark brown to black and usually 3–5 mm long, with long legs, a smooth body and a sharp, needlelike stinger. It can both bite and sting, but the sting is what people usually notice most because it can be sharp and painful.

The species originated in East Asia and was introduced from Asia before spreading here. Its name reflects that history: the “Asian” part refers to East Asia, including Japan and China, while “needle ant” describes the long, narrow stinger. The ants are not native to the United States.

That matters because the insect is invasive. It outcompetes native ants and disrupts local ecosystems, while its range continues to expand slowly. The ants also thrive in moist, shaded places such as mulch, logs and leaf litter, which means suburban yards can provide the kind of cover they like.

The sharp sting is only part of the problem. Asian needle ants can use their mandibles to bite and hold onto skin, then inject venom with the stinger. The result is often described as noticeable and sometimes painful, making the insect memorable long after the encounter ends.

For now, the species has not yet expanded to Arizona. But with reports already stretching across much of the eastern United States, the next question is less about whether the ant will keep moving and more about how far west and south it will go before people start noticing it in their own yards.
