Brady Ebert, a former Turnstile guitarist, was arrested March 31 in Montgomery County, Maryland, and charged with attempted second-degree murder and first-degree assault after police say he struck William Yates, the father of the band’s frontman, with a car outside a Silver Spring home.
William Yates was found Sunday, March 29, in the front yard of his Silver Spring home with trauma to his lower extremities, according to Montgomery County police. He said Ebert drove up, honked his horn and cursed at him before leaving, then returned and intentionally hit him while he was standing in the driveway. Yates said Ebert came back once more before first responders arrived and told him he “deserved it.”
Ebert made his first court appearance April 1 and was being held without bond. Turnstile said it cut ties with Ebert in 2022 because of “a consistent pattern of harmful behavior” affecting himself, the band and the community, and said his threats escalated further in recent months. The band said Ebert went to the house of Brendan Yates’s parents and used his vehicle to run over Brendan’s father, causing severe physical trauma, and said it was grateful William Yates survived and had successfully undergone surgery.
The case lands against a bitter backdrop that has stretched beyond the band’s breakup. Ebert was one of Turnstile’s founding members alongside Brendan Yates, Franz Lyons and Daniel Fang, and parted ways with the group in 2022. The PRP reported that Fang had filed a peace order against him. Last year, Ebert formed a new band, the S.E.T., but he was kicked out in February after posting inflammatory comments about Turnstile online.
William Yates said Ebert had been causing issues with his family since being fired from the band. Prosecutors will now have to prove whether the crash was an act of rage and retaliation or something less deliberate, but the charge sheet already shows how far the conflict has escalated: from a private split in 2022 to a violent allegation in a driveway this week.
