Adrienne Warren will join the Broadway revival of Proof on June 30, taking over the role of Claire two days after Kara Young plays her final performance. Young will vacate the part on June 28 because of her previously announced commitment to The Whoopi Monologues at Lincoln Center Theater.
The casting change keeps the production moving just weeks after Proof opened April 16 at the Booth Theatre, with Ayo Edebiri and Don Cheadle both making their Broadway performance debuts alongside Jin Ha. Warren arrives with serious Broadway credentials of her own: she won the Tony Award for best actress in a musical in 2021 for Tina: The Tina Turner Musical, was most recently seen in New York City Center Encores!’ The Wild Party, and appeared last year as Cathy in the Broadway revival of The Last Five Years opposite Nick Jonas.
That matters because Proof is not a new play trying to find its footing. David Auburn’s Tony- and Pulitzer-winning drama returned to Broadway after more than two decades, under the direction of Thomas Kail, and the production now has to absorb a high-profile cast change almost immediately after opening. The switch also shows how tightly packed the season is for in-demand stage actors, with Young’s departure driven by another commitment already on the calendar rather than by any shift inside Proof itself.
For audiences, the next change comes fast: Young is out on June 28, and Warren steps in on June 30. The revival’s early run will now be judged with a new Claire in place, and Warren’s arrival gives the production another well-known Broadway lead as it settles into its post-opening life.
