Vincent D'Onofrio has moved quickly to cool off a swirl of speculation around Matthew Lillard after saying he had a "hard time" working with him on Daredevil: Born Again season 2. D'Onofrio later took to X to make clear that the problem was not Lillard himself, but the character he was playing.
On set, D'Onofrio said Lillard's role was "so annoying" that it affected how he responded to him off camera. He added that it was the first time that had happened on Daredevil and stressed that it was Lillard's character, and not Lillard himself, that he did not want to share a room with.
The moment landed because D'Onofrio and Matthew Lillard already have history. The two previously appeared opposite each other in the 1999 film Spanish Judges, also released as Ruthless Behavior, and D'Onofrio said he was excited to reunite with him. Charlie Cox also weighed in, pointing out how brilliant Lillard was at being "annoying," which only fed the chatter around the exchange.

The tension, though, came from the way the comment traveled. D'Onofrio's remarks began drawing attention after an on-screen conversation involving him and Cox, and the quote was taken in a way that suggested a real off-camera rift. His clarification on X was meant to shut that down and reframe the story around performance, not personality. In the series, D'Onofrio plays Mayor Fisk and Lillard plays Fisk's adversary, Mr. Charles.
For viewers, the practical takeaway is simple: there is no feud to watch for, only a villainous turn that seems to have done its job too well. The second season of Daredevil: Born Again is streaming on Disney+, with new episodes dropping on Tuesdays.
