Forever season 2 is officially in production in Los Angeles, and Netflix says the eight-episode follow-up is already moving toward a 2027 release. The new season started rolling on May 8, the same day the series reached its one-year mark on the platform.
The streamer also confirmed three new cast members for forever season 2: Malaika Guttoh, Avery Wills Jr. and Tre McBride. Lovie Simone, Michael Cooper Jr., Karen Pittman, Wood Harris and Xosha Roquemore are all returning as series regulars, while Khris Riddick-Tynes has joined the production in a behind-the-scenes role.
Netflix’s new logline picks up Justin and Keisha four years later, saying they are doing well after the pandemic, with new relationships, real jobs and the pressures of adult life behind them, until they cross paths again in summer 2023. Mara Brock Akil said the new season is “back in Los Angeles” and “back inside a love story that keeps revealing itself,” adding that the story is now being explored through friendship and the question of whether forever is truly forever.
The return comes with clear momentum. Season 1 spent four weeks in Netflix’s global top 10 and generated 103.2 million viewing hours and 15.9 million completed views, figures that helped establish the series as a breakout hit for the service. The California Film Commission had already signaled a return to the state in November, and season 2 is also expected to film in Martha’s Vineyard.
That production footprint comes with money attached: the new season is receiving a government-funded tax credit of $22.1 million. Cameras are expected to keep rolling through Sept. 10, 2026, giving the follow-up a long runway before the expected 2027 release. For a show that arrived as a fast-rising romantic drama, the next chapter is no longer just a renewal. It is a larger bet that the audience that showed up for season 1 will stay for the deeper question now at the center of the story: what happens when a first love grows up with the people who lived it?
