The Edmonton Oilers visited the San Jose Sharks on April 9 at 10 p.m. ET in a meeting that carried playoff consequences for both teams and a marquee matchup between Connor McDavid and Macklin Celebrini. Edmonton came in after a 6-5 overtime loss to the Utah Mammoth on Tuesday, while San Jose was still trying to climb back into the Western Conference race.
The Oilers were tied for first in the Pacific Division with the Vegas Golden Knights at 88 points, with four games left. Edmonton also held the regulation wins tiebreaker over Vegas, 30-28, which could matter if the division race stays tight over the final stretch. The Sharks were three points behind the Nashville Predators for the second wild card in the Western Conference, with six games remaining, and the Los Angeles Kings were also ahead of San Jose with 83 points and five games left.
McDavid and Celebrini were the obvious draw, and the matchup carried extra intrigue because the two had been linemates for Team Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics. That made this more than another late-season game between teams on different tracks. Edmonton was trying to protect its spot at the top of the division after a costly loss in Utah, and San Jose needed points fast if it wanted any chance of catching the teams ahead of it.

There were nine days left in the regular season, which left little room for either club to waste chances. The Oilers had a clear path to the division title if they could keep pace, but the Sharks were facing a tougher climb, with Nashville and Los Angeles both in front of them and time running out. What happened on April 9 mattered because every point from here on out could decide whether Edmonton finishes first or San Jose finishes on the outside looking in.

For McDavid and Celebrini, the meeting was a reminder of how quickly the league’s present and future can share the same ice. For the teams, it was a night where the standings told the story before the puck even dropped.
