Braga and Real Betis meet in Minho on Wednesday in the opening fixture of their Europa League quarter-final tie, with the Portuguese side arriving on the back of another rescue act and the visitors trying to halt a run that has started to fray across competitions.
Braga overturned a two-goal deficit from the first leg of their last-16 clash with Ferencvaros to go through 4-0 in the return leg in Minho, a result that carried Carlos Vicens's team into the quarter-finals for the fourth time. It was their first return to the last eight since 2021-22, and they have gone beyond that stage only once, in 2010-11, the season they reached their only European final and lost to Porto.
The numbers at home give Braga a reason to believe they can make another fast start. They had won eight of their previous 10 home matches before their most recent home defeat, and they have kept seven clean sheets in 10 Europa League mainstage games. They also beat Moreirense 1-0 on Saturday through a 24th-minute goal from Fran Navarro, a result that left them fourth in the Primeira Liga table and in a tidy position heading into this tie.

Real Betis arrive with a very different rhythm. They drew 0-0 with Espanyol in their most recent league outing and were fifth in the La Liga table after that result, with just one win in their last eight matches across all competitions. Yet they were sharper in Europe last time out, beating Panathinaikos 4-0 in Seville to advance 4-1 on aggregate after losing 1-0 in Greece. This is their first quarter-final in the Europa League, though they did reach the Europa Conference League final last season and lose to Chelsea.
There is also a travel problem. Betis have lost each of their last three away matches, and Minho has not been a welcoming stop for them before: they won 4-0 on a previous visit there against Vitoria de Guimaraes. That history only sharpens the contrast between a Braga side that has repeatedly responded at home and a Betis team still searching for steadier form on the road.
The one thing this tie does not have is familiarity. Braga and Real Betis are meeting for the first time in a competitive match, so the opening leg carries extra weight in a contest where neither side can lean on past meetings for clues. Braga have already shown they can erase damage quickly, while Betis know they cannot afford another flat away performance if they want to take control before the return in Seville.
