The Europa League final is set for Istanbul after Aston Villa and Freiburg won through in this week's semifinal second legs, lining up a title match that will be played at Tupras Stadium on Wednesday, May 20, 2026.
Aston Villa erased a 1-0 first-leg deficit and beat Nottingham Forest 4-1 on aggregate after a 4-0 win at Villa Park. Freiburg went through 4-3 across the two legs against Braga, and will play in a first European final in their history. The matchup was decided in the second legs, with Villa's surge and Freiburg's narrow progression delivering a final that now has a place and a date: 11 p.m. local time in Istanbul.
Tupras Stadium, the home of 16-time Turkish champions Besiktas, holds just under 44,000 spectators and will make Turkey the 14th country to host the Europa League final. The venue adds another stop to a tournament that has changed shape over time. Until 1998, the final was a two-legged contest, with each finalist playing once at home, but the competition now ends with a single showpiece on neutral ground.
The final also arrives with a familiar heavyweight missing from the route. UEFA has done away with the ability of Champions League sides to drop down into the Europa League, closing off the pathway that once gave the competition some of its biggest names after the group stage. That leaves this season's final to be decided entirely by the teams that earned their way here in the competition itself.
Sevilla remain the benchmark. They have won the Europa League on seven occasions and have never lost a final, including the 2023 final against Jose Mourinho's Roma, which they won on penalties. Inter Milan, Liverpool, Juventus and Atletico Madrid have each lifted the trophy three times, but Freiburg now have a chance to join a very different list: clubs reaching their first European final and trying to turn it into something more than a breakthrough night.
For Freiburg, the semifinal win over Braga was enough to make history. For Villa, the comeback against Nottingham Forest was the kind of result that changes the feel of a season. What comes next is a final in Istanbul that brings those two paths together under the lights, with one club chasing its first European crown and the other chasing a place alongside the competition's most decorated names.
