President Donald Trump said on April 30 that his nominee for surgeon general is Casey Means, even as he acknowledged opposition from Republican Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana. Trump made the announcement in a post on Truth Social.
Trump said Means will continue to fight for the Make America Healthy Again movement, using the acronym MAHA in his message. He wrote that, despite Cassidy’s “intransigence and political games,” Means will keep pressing on “the many important Health issues facing our Country.”
The disclosure puts Means at the center of a fight that is already split along Republican lines. Cassidy, a Republican senator from Louisiana, has opposed the nomination, giving the White House’s health pick an immediate political hurdle.
MAHA stands for the Make America Healthy Again movement, the health-focused effort Trump tied to Means in his post. With that backing now public, the next question is whether Cassidy’s opposition hardens or whether the nomination moves forward despite the resistance.
