Gervonta Davis is being accused of avoiding unbeaten contender Floyd Schofield as the lightweight champion-in-recess remains without an announced next fight. Schofield’s camp says the 135-pound title picture should already be clearer, either with Davis or with another bout for the belt.
Schofield Sr. said there was “a reason why Tank said, ‘I will never get in the ring with that kid’” and added that Davis’s coach had said the same online. Floyd Schofield, 19-0 with 13 knockouts, is the fighter his team wants in line for that opening, but no agreement has been announced between the camps.
The issue matters now because Davis has not fought since his draw with Lamont Roach Jr. last year, and a rematch with Isaac Cruz has been regularly mentioned as a possible return. That leaves the WBA lightweight title situation unresolved while Schofield’s side waits to learn whether it is getting a shot at Davis or being pushed into another path at the weight.
Schofield Sr. made clear his camp would rather see Davis return straight into a title fight at 135 pounds than take a tune-up bout first. “We want to suck him dry and fight him at 135, that is the best advantage that we have right now. If we let Tank get a tune-up, he would be on fire,” he said, while also noting that Davis is “about 175 pounds right now” and would need to come “all the way back down to 135.”
Davis has not publicly responded to the latest claims. Until he names an opponent, he still holds the stronger hand, even as Schofield’s team argues that the wait itself is becoming part of the fight.
