Anthropic has quietly removed Claude Code from its Pro subscription plan on some of its public-facing web pages, even as other pages still say the code tool is included. On Monday, the company’s pricing page said the Pro plan included Claude Code. By Tuesday, that language was gone and the feature list showed an X next to Claude Code instead of a check mark.
The shift has stirred confusion among Claude subscribers who had vented in online forums after assuming a major plan change was underway. For a company that has been tightening usage and adding limits to its AI products, the change landed as another sign that Anthropic is still sorting out how much access to give paying customers as demand keeps rising.
Anthropic’s Claude Code product page still said the Pro plan provides access to the code generation tool when the story was filed, and when the reporter asked Claude.ai about the change, it also said the Pro plan includes Claude Code. A cited documentation page updated today mentioned only the Max plan, deepening the mismatch across Anthropic’s own materials.
Amol Avasare said the adjustment is just a small test affecting about 2 percent of new prosumer signups. “For clarity, we're running a small test on ~2 percent of new prosumer signups,” he said, adding that “Existing Pro and Max subscribers aren't affected.”
He said Anthropic is trying to adapt its plans to how people now use the service. “When we launched Max a year ago, it didn't include Claude Code, Cowork didn't exist, and agents that run for hours weren't a thing. Max was designed for heavy chat usage, that's it,” Avasare said. “Since then, we bundled Claude Code into Max and it took off after Opus 4. Cowork landed. Long-running async agents are now everyday workflows. The way people actually use a Claude subscription has changed fundamentally.”
The company has been taking steps recently to limit usage of its AI models as it tries to dampen demand amid tight capacity. Anthropic introduced usage limits last month to encourage use during off-peak hours, and Avasare said the current plans were not built for the way subscribers now use the products. “Engagement per subscriber is way up. We've made small adjustments along the way (weekly caps, tighter limits at peak), but usage has changed a lot and our current plans weren't built for this,” he said. “So we're looking at different options to keep delivering a great experience for users. We don't know exactly what those look like yet – that's what we're testing and getting feedback on right now.”
The tension is that Anthropic’s own pages do not all tell the same story. The pricing page changed, but the Claude Code product page and the CLI output still pointed to Pro access, suggesting the company is testing a narrower policy before deciding whether to apply it more broadly.
For now, the change appears limited, not a full rollback. But the mixed signals show how quickly AI subscription plans are being rewritten in response to heavier use, and how easily customers can be left reading between the lines when the company updates one page before the rest.
