Mara Flávia drowned Saturday during the swimming endurance portion of the Ironman competition in Texas after vanishing in Lake Woodlands during the open-water swim. She was 38.
The pro female swim began at 6:31 a.m. in the 140-mile race, but frantic calls were already reaching the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and the Woodlands Township Fire Department by around 6 a.m. Woodlands Fire Chief Palmer Buck said crews were first told about the lost swimmer around 7:30 a.m., and rescuers kept searching the lake while the triathlon was still underway.
Flávia, a Brazilian influencer with more than 60,000 followers on Instagram, was pulled from the water just after 9:30 a.m. Buck said the dive team had zero visibility, and by the time crews recovered her body it had sunk about 10 feet to the bottom of the lake. The sheriff’s office said she drowned while taking part in the swim portion of the event.
The Ironman race is built around three punishing trials, and the swim is often where the field first begins to break apart. In this case, it became a search marked by urgency and confusion as witnesses and rescuers tried to find one athlete in open water while the race continued around them.
An Ironman volunteer described panic and fear among people on the course after Flávia disappeared beneath the surface. One veteran racer, the volunteer said, sat with a thousand-yard stare after watching someone vanish under him. The volunteer said the scene stayed with her because it was clear the swimmer was chasing something most people only dream of finishing, and she believed Flávia had shown up for it and deserved to come out of it.
The sheriff’s office said its Major Crimes unit will continue the investigation under normal protocols. For Flávia’s family, the painful reality is that a race meant to test the limits of endurance ended in a lake search that could not bring her back.
