A triathlete died during the swim portion of the 2026 IRONMAN Texas triathlon on Saturday in The Woodlands, and IRONMAN confirmed the death at 10:45 a.m. ET.
“We are saddened to confirm the death of a race participant during the swim portion of today’s IRONMAN Texas triathlon,” the company said, adding that it would support the athlete’s family and friends through “this very difficult time.” It also thanked first responders for their assistance.
The race was the 2026 Memorial Hermann IRONMAN Texas North American Championship, held Saturday, April 18, in The Woodlands. A later update from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office came at 1 p.m. ET, and Hello Woodlands cited both IRONMAN and the sheriff’s office as sources.
The death comes against the backdrop of an earlier incident report about drowning in Lake Woodlands, the venue tied to the event’s swim portion. That leaves the key unanswered question centered on how the athlete’s death unfolded during the race and what further information authorities will release about the circumstances.
