The Mets returned to Citi Field on April 7 to open a three-game series against the Diamondbacks, a meeting between two teams that have spent the early season looking much the same: dangerous one night, uneven the next. New York came home at 6-4 after a seven-game road trip that began with a 7-2 loss to the Giants and ended with three straight wins. Arizona arrived at 5-5.
The matchup fits what these clubs have already shown in 2025. The Mets and Diamondbacks split their six games this year, and the road team won two of three in each of the two series. That history has made this a close game of margins, and the Mets enter with some momentum after beating the Giants 10-3, 9-0 and 5-2. They also did it with a lineup that was producing at a high level: New York had 10 or more hits in each of those wins, went 40-for-117 on the road trip and finished 17-for-40 with runners in scoring position.
That run mattered because the trip had started with a problem. David Peterson was roughed up in the opener, Sean Manaea covered 3 2/3 innings in relief support, and the Mets looked nothing like a club ready to settle in. Then the bats caught fire. Francisco Alvarez hit two home runs on the trip, Marcus Semien hit his first home run as a Met on Friday, Tyrone Taylor followed with a three-run shot on Saturday, and the club scored four runs in the eighth inning on Sunday to close the swing with a win. Mark Vientos slashed.450/.500/.700 over the trip, while Brett Baty went 20 plate appearances at.200/.200/.300 and Carson Benge finished at.100/.182/.100.
The one jarring note came after the team got home. Juan Soto was placed on the injured list with a calf strain and is expected to miss two to three weeks, leaving the Mets to open this series without one of their biggest names. That absence lands at a time when the club is trying to carry over the energy from the road trip and keep its place in a tight early race.
Arizona brings its own uneven profile. The Diamondbacks were swept by the Dodgers, swept the Tigers and then split four games with the Braves, after being outscored 19-2 in the first two games before winning the next two by one run apiece. That kind of week makes them look every bit like the.500 team they are right now, even with Corbin Carroll hitting.313/.410/. on the season. Both teams know each other well, and both have already shown they can turn quickly from flat to sharp. The next three games will show whether the Mets’ three-game winning streak was a turn or just another stop on a season still looking for shape.
