has been placed on the 15-day injured list with a left biceps strain, retroactive to April 3, Sahadev Sharma reports. Right-hander will be recalled from the minors and is lined up to start the next game.

There wasn’t an obvious warning sign before the move. Boyd took the ball for the first two turns this season: his first outing went poorly (six earned runs in 3 2/3 innings), but he rebounded Wednesday with 5 2/3 innings, ten strikeouts and just two earned runs. One small red flag—his fastball velocity dipped from an average of 93.3 mph in the opener to about 92.2 mph in the second start.

Both Boyd and manager Craig Counsell reportedly view the problem as minor and expect a short IL stint. Still, it lands at an awkward time for the ’ rotation. remains on the 60-day injured list as he recovers from last season’s surgery, and was placed on the IL last week with forearm discomfort, leaving his timetable uncertain.

That leaves Edward Cabrera, Jameson Taillon and Shota Imanaga occupying three of the rotation spots. Assad—optioned to begin the year—is the first up to fill a vacancy, and it’s likely , who started the season in the bullpen, will move back into the rotation as well.

Assad is a reasonable stopgap: he has a 3.43 ERA over 331 big-league innings. Rea has shown value as a swing arm (3.95 ERA last year), and the Cubs reworked his deal in November to keep him around, including a club option for 2027. Those two give the club some experience, but losing two starters in a few days is far from ideal.

Depth behind them is thin. The remaining 40-man players currently on optional assignment are mostly relievers. Ben Brown could be a short-term spot starter, but he’s in the big-league bullpen. Prospect Jaxon Wiggins is in Triple-A but not yet on the 40-man and has struggled with control, posting a 13.9% walk rate to date. And veteran Vince Velasquez recently threw five innings in a Triple-A start, a reminder the Cubs may have to lean on veteran depth if injuries persist.

For now this looks manageable rather than catastrophic, but it does increase the urgency for healthy innings from Assad, Rea and the remaining rotation pieces while the club waits on recoveries.
