Real Madrid lost to Mallorca on Saturday, and with that defeat the club’s LaLiga chase was described as too far away. That leaves the Champions League as its only realistic path to avoid a trophyless 2025-2026 season, with Bayern Munich waiting this week.
The burden now sits on a side that has already lived through too many uneasy nights this season. Real Madrid eliminated Manchester City in the previous round, and Federico Valverde stood out in that win, but the run to the quarterfinals has also included uncomfortable results against Albacete in the Copa del Rey, Benfica in the Champions League league phase, and Osasuna, Getafe and Mallorca in LaLiga.
Bayern arrive looking far sharper. They beat Atalanta 10-2 on aggregate in the round of 16, reached 100 goals in 28 Bundesliga matches after a 3-2 win over Freiburg, and carry a +73 goal difference in the league. With six matches left, they hold a nine-point lead over Borussia Dortmund and are being described as the most in-form team in Europe. Harry Kane, Michael Olise, Luis Díaz and Lennart Karl give them a front line that can punish the smallest mistake.
Real Madrid’s recent instability gives the tie even more weight. Xabi Alonso was dismissed in January after pressure from some players who did not fit his tactical idea, and Álvaro Arbeloa took over after six months in charge of the club’s Castilla team. That change did not stop the uneven results, and it has left the club leaning hard on the one competition that can still salvage the season.
That is what makes the Bayern matchup so stark. Real Madrid have already shown they can survive a heavyweight, but they have also shown how fragile the campaign has been around that success. If they cannot find another gear now, the season ends with one bright memory and a long list of what went wrong.
