Agyemang Ruled Out World Cup? Derby striker injury jolts U.S. plans

Patrick Agyemang’s injury against Stoke City could affect the U.S. World Cup picture after his return to the national team in March.

Patrick Agyemang was taken off on a stretcher during Derby County’s Championship match against Stoke City on Monday after landing awkwardly in the latter stages of the first half. Derby said the 25-year-old had to be substituted in the 41st minute, with Jadon Banel coming on in his place.

The injury matters because Agyemang had just worked his way back into the U.S. national team picture. He played in both of the USMNT’s March friendlies against Belgium and Portugal, logging 65 minutes across the two matches, and had been in contention for a place on Mauricio Pochettino’s World Cup roster this summer.

For Derby, the loss comes at a heavy moment. Before Monday’s match, the club sat eighth in the Championship, three points behind Wrexham in sixth, and Agyemang had been one of its most productive forwards with ten goals in 37 league appearances. At 6ft 4ins, he gives the team a presence few others can match, which is why his exit in a match that could shape the promotion race landed hard.

Agyemang’s national-team case had already been gaining pace after a long gap away from the setup. July’s 2025 Gold Cup semi-final and final were his first games for the U.S. since then, and the March window offered another chance to show he belonged in the mix for the summer. That makes the timing of this setback especially awkward for both club and country.

The complication is that the injury may end up shaping Pochettino’s decision for him. If Agyemang is sidelined long term, the U.S. coach could be forced to sort out his No. 9 depth chart without one of the four strikers who had been pressing for a World Cup role. For Agyemang, the next step is simpler and harsher at once: get the scan, get the diagnosis, and find out how much of the season — and the summer — is still open to him.
