The Walking Lot at John Glenn Columbus International Airport will permanently close for new parkers on May 4, clearing space for a new public safety building tied to the airport’s overhaul.

The said commuters who rely on the lot for short-term parking should use valet service or the airport’s parking garage instead, with the Red or Green Shuttle Lots also available. The new building will house offices, training facilities and the public safety communications center.

The closure is part of CMH Next, a $2 billion transformation of CMH that also includes a new terminal and a new 500-plus-space parking garage connected to the terminal by a pedestrian bridge. The airport says the public safety building is needed for construction of that broader project and for future parking infrastructure.

The timing matters because the lot will close now, while the larger project is still years from opening. The new terminal is set to open in 2029, and the Walking Lot closure is one of the first visible signs that the airport’s redevelopment is moving from planning into construction.
