A begins at 11 a.m. Thursday and runs through 5 a.m. Friday, with Las Vegas facing southwest gusts of 20-25 mph in the morning and 30 mph in the afternoon before a cold front flips the wind and clears the sky by evening.

The change will be felt quickly. Temperatures in the 70s are expected to fall into the 60s by 10 p.m., then drop to low 50s overnight with north gusts of 25-30 mph and clear skies. Friday starts in the low 50s and stays windy through midday, with north gusts reaching 30 mph and afternoon temperatures limited to near 70 degrees even as 20-25 mph winds continue.

The advisory lasts until 11 a.m. Friday for Lake Mead and the Colorado River valley, but the breezy stretch does not end there. Friday night is forecast to fall to near 50 degrees, with 40s away from The Strip, before northeast breezes of 10-20 mph arrive Saturday under partly cloudy skies and highs in the upper 70s.

By Sunday, the weather settles back into a mild pattern with highs in the mid 80s and south breezes of 10-20 mph. Monday stays warm in the mid 80s, but gusty southwest winds of 20-35 mph return, followed by Tuesday with southwest breezes of 15-25 mph and highs near 80 degrees. Highs are then expected to hover in the mid-to-upper 70s for the rest of next week.

That matters because the wind shift will also change day-to-day conditions across the region. Air quality is forecast to be moderate today and good tomorrow as north winds move in, while pollen levels remain extreme this week with tree pollen from mulberry, ash and juniper the dominant type. The UV index is high from 11 a.m. through 2 p.m., and sun protection is advised between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. today.
