Aaron Ramsey has retired from professional football with immediate effect. The 35-year-old announced the decision on social media, ending a career that took him from Cardiff City to Arsenal, Juventus, Nice, Rangers and Pumas UNAM.
Ramsey scored 21 goals in 86 appearances for Wales and was central to the country’s run to the Euro 2016 semi-finals, when he earned a place in Uefa’s team of the tournament. He also played for Wales at Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup, where the team reached the finals stage for the first time in 64 years. In club football, he spent 11 years at Arsenal after joining in 2008, won three FA Cups and scored the winner in two finals. He also had a loan spell at Rangers, helping them reach the 2022 Europa League final before missing in the shootout, and later returned to Cardiff for a second stint.
Ramsey had been without a club since leaving Mexican side Pumas UNAM last year, after joining them in the hope of staying fit enough to play for Wales at the summer’s World Cup had the team qualified. He is expected to pursue a career in coaching and had already spent a short period as Cardiff’s interim head coach at the end of last season. That background gives his exit a rare shape: this is not a farewell forced by a final injury or a last failed move, but a planned step into the next part of his football life.

In his message, Ramsey said the choice had not been easy and that, after careful thought, he had decided to retire. He thanked Wales first, saying it had been his privilege to wear the Welsh shirt and to live through so many memorable moments, and sent a message to the Red Wall, thanking supporters for standing by him “through thick and thin.” He also thanked the clubs he played for and paid tribute to his wife, children and wider family. For Wales, his departure closes the international career of one of the team’s most influential players, and for Ramsey, it opens the door to coaching with a record that will make his next move worth watching.
