Real Madrid led Bayern Munich 3-2 at half-time in Munich after a wild first 45 minutes that swung back and forth before Kylian Mbappé finished from close range, pushing the visitors ahead just before the break. Mbappé controlled Vinicius Jr.'s pass from the left and scored with his right foot between Manuel Neuer's legs for his 15th Champions League goal of the season in his 11th appearance.
Arda Güler had already put Real Madrid ahead twice. He opened the scoring with a left-footed free kick from about 25 metres on the right side of the pitch, and after Bayern pulled level again, he struck a second time before Mbappé's finish. Harry Kane answered for Bayern with his 11th Champions League goal of the season in his 10th match, equalising at 2-2 after controlling with his left foot and scoring with his right. Vinicius nearly restored Real Madrid's lead with a left-footed shot that hit the crossbar, while Joshua Kimmich forced Andriy Lunin into a save with a left-footed shot from around 20 metres. Bayern had 58% possession but could not turn it into control, and Minjae Kim was booked for a foul on Kane as Leroy Sané was flagged offside on the left and Serge Gnabry had a shot blocked by Lunin.
The match was evenly balanced over the two legs after Güler's second goal, but the first half in Munich still left Bayern chasing the game at home. Real Madrid have made their chances count; Bayern have had more of the ball without matching the finishing, and the second half now has to settle what the opening 45 minutes only sharpened.
