Johnny Cardoso was named in Atlético Madrid’s squad for Tuesday’s Champions League quarterfinal second leg against Barcelona, giving Diego Simeone another option in midfield after a three-game absence. The 24-year-old had missed the first leg win over Barcelona and the last three matches while recovering from an injury suffered on international duty.
Cardoso’s return matters because Atlético have been managing a stretched squad at a critical point in the season, and the American midfielder is again available for a match that could shape the club’s European run. He was expected to compete with Koke, Marcos Llorente, Rodri Mendoza and Obed Vargas for a starting place in central midfield.
The injury interruption began after Cardoso played 45 minutes for the United States against Belgium on March 28, when he was later reported to be dealing with muscle fatigue. He was then released before the U.S. second March friendly against Portugal and returned to Madrid, where he was later confirmed to have suffered a thigh muscle injury. That setback kept him out of LaLiga defeats to Barcelona and Sevilla, as well as the first leg of the quarterfinal.
Cardoso has been in and out of Atlético’s team since joining from Real Betis last summer, but he had started the club’s last two matches before the March international break, against Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League and Real Madrid in LaLiga. His inclusion for Tuesday comes as Atlético also deal with other selection issues, with José María Giménez, David Hancko and Marc Pubill unavailable and Pablo Barrios still absent. Jan Oblak is back in contention after missing the last seven games with a muscle injury, adding another timely return for Simeone.
For Cardoso, the next step is simple: turn a squad place into minutes. Atlético need bodies, but they also need the players who can hold up under the pressure of a knockout tie, and the American’s return gives Simeone one more choice in a midfield battle that could decide whether the night belongs to Madrid or Barcelona.
