The Minnesota Twins are leading the AL Central through 16 games, but Byron Buxton is already becoming one of the names to watch before August's trade deadline. Several teams have shown interest in the outfielder early in the 2026 regular season, and the New York Mets have emerged as a popular destination in trade talk.
Buxton is coming off a career year in 2025 and had MVP support in his second All-Star campaign, which is part of why he still carries the profile of a franchise cornerstone even while his bat has opened slowly this season. Through 14 games, he is hitting.182 over 55 at-bats with 10 hits, nine runs, four extra-base hits and one RBI, and he has yet to homer or steal a base.
The interest has created an odd split between Minnesota's place in the standings and Buxton's individual numbers. The Twins are winning now, but a player who can change a lineup still has enough value to draw attention from clubs looking ahead, especially with the deadline still months away.
Any deal would come down to fit, and the rumored package makes the logic plain. New York has reportedly expressed interest in sending Luke Weaver, Tobias Myers and Ryan Clifford to Minnesota, a return that would reinforce the Twins' bullpen with Myers and Weaver while giving them a highly touted prospect in Clifford, who could become a power bat at first base.
That is the friction point for Minnesota: Buxton remains the face of the roster, but the slow start gives rival clubs a reason to ask, and the Twins would have to weigh short-term standing against long-term needs. If the talks keep building, August's trade deadline could test whether Minnesota sees Buxton as a piece to keep pushing with or the one trade chip that changes the rest of the season.
