Ty France is going back where it started. The veteran infielder signed a minor-league contract to return to the San Diego Padres for the 2026 season, a move that sends him back to the organization that drafted him in 2015.
The deal carries a $1.35 million salary for 2026, and the Padres are getting a player with a far longer track record than a typical minor-league signing. France has been an All-Star, made a World Series appearance and won a Gold Glove in 2025, a season that added another line to a resume already built across several clubs.
France said the journey back has been as scrambled as it sounds. “It was a whirlwind, for sure, but I'm excited to be a part of this group,” he said.

That group needs the help. Sung-Mun Song is starting the 2026 season on the injured list, and the Padres used France’s return to address a roster hole with a familiar face. The move gives San Diego a low-risk, high-reward option while bringing back a player whose path has run through the Mariners, Reds, Twins and Blue Jays since leaving the organization that first brought him into pro ball.
For France, the signing is also a homecoming. He broke in with the Padres after being drafted by them in 2015, then spent years bouncing around the league before settling into a profile that blends experience, contact skills and defensive value. The All-Star nod in 2022 and the Gold Glove in 2025 showed there was still more to his game than a journeyman label might suggest.

The question now is not whether France has the résumé to matter. It is how quickly he can turn a minor-league deal into a real role when San Diego opens 2026 with a need already on the board.
