and met at the in 2012, after she helped get him a police escort because he was running late. A new book about the golfer’s personal life says that was the start of a relationship that would later survive gossip, a breakup scare and a public divorce filing before the pair were seen together again at the sport’s biggest stages.

Stoll was by McIlroy’s side when he won at in 2025, and again at the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in September. That visibility is notable because she has long kept herself out of the spotlight, never giving interviews and staying largely unknown to most golf fans.

The relationship did not begin in plain sight. McIlroy was with when gossip spread that he was flirting with Stoll, and an unnamed employee later recalled, “He was throwing every ounce of game he had at Erica.” Another employee said, “It was not subtle. It became a running joke among a few of us: Has Rory closed the deal yet?”

McIlroy and Wozniacki got engaged in December 2013, but he broke off the engagement five months later. He and Stoll were said to have started dating a few months after that split, though they did not go public until 2015. By then, the quiet, private figure who had first arranged his ride at the Ryder Cup had become the woman beside him as his life on and off the course drew constant attention.

The strain in that spotlight became impossible to miss in 2024. McIlroy filed for divorce from Stoll in May, saying the marriage was irretrievably broken. A month later, he said they had realized that their best future was as a family together. The couple share a 5-year-old daughter, , and the reconciliation ended one of the most closely watched splits in golf.

Paul McGinley, a former Ryder Cup captain, once put it bluntly: “it can’t be easy being Rory’s wife.” Alan Shipnuck, whose new book frames much of the discussion, argued that the short-lived divorce proceedings and rapid reconciliation said more about McIlroy than about Stoll. “If you are an internationally famous athlete heading toward becoming a billionaire, it is probably unwise to file for divorce unless you are one million percent certain there is zero chance to save the marriage,” Shipnuck said. He added that McIlroy’s life “has been defined by impetuousness, on the golf course and in matters of business and romance,” and that “the recklessness is part of what makes him appealing.”

The book also comes after rumors in 2024 tied McIlroy to golf reporter , though people close to them said the relationship never became romantic. For McIlroy, the scrutiny has followed him for years. For Stoll, who has stayed quiet and out of view, the public story has always been written by everyone else around her. What matters now is that she remains present in the moments that count most, even after a divorce filing that briefly made the couple look finished.
