The are playoff-bound as a top-six seed for the first time since the 2020-21 season, and tonight’s game against the could still shape where they land in the Eastern Conference. Atlanta has a real chance to finish as the No. 5 seed, but there is also a decent possibility the Hawks slide to No. 6 and open the first round against the .

That makes the matchup more about positioning than urgency for Atlanta, which seems to be prioritizing rest over seeding. Even if the Hawks lose, other results could leave them at No. 5 anyway. The Heat, by contrast, are locked into a far steeper path: they need to win two play-in games just to reach the postseason.

Miami has at least had Atlanta’s number this season. The Heat went 2-1 against the Hawks, and both of their wins came in blowout fashion. That gives this game a familiar edge, even if the stakes are different for each team. Atlanta is trying to hold its place near the top of the bracket. Miami is trying to avoid a postseason path with no margin for error.

The Hawks’ numbers explain why the season has been good enough to matter and uneven enough to keep the seeding uncertain. They are 6th in points, 13th in field-goal percentage, 6th in 3-point percentage, 20th in free-throw percentage, 18th in rebounds, 1st in assists and 11th in turnovers per game. They rank 14th in offensive rating, while defensively they are 17th in points allowed, 17th in field-goal percentage allowed, 13th in 3-point percentage allowed, 21st in rebounds allowed, 5th in steals and 17th in blocks, good for 9th in defensive rating overall.

Miami’s recent profile is harder to read as a threat than it used to be. The Heat have been a postseason fixture for years, but this season has not been especially impressive, and they have not looked like the same scrappy team that once played with Jimmy Butler at the helm before moving on from him. Atlanta’s path is cleaner, but not fully settled. If the Hawks want to shape their own bracket, they need one more strong finish and a little help elsewhere.
