Arizona State is parting ways with Bobby Hurley, ending his 11-season run as the school’s men’s basketball coach after a 91-42 loss to No. 7 Iowa State in the Big 12 tournament on Wednesday. Athletic director Graham Rossini said the school will not extend Hurley’s contract, and he is expected to be placed on administrative leave until it expires in June.
Hurley leaves Arizona State as the second-winningest coach in program history behind only Ned Wulk, finishing 185-167 over 11 seasons. Rossini said Hurley made “incredible contributions” to the sport and called out the “many memorable moments” during his time at ASU, while also thanking Hurley, Leslie, Cameron, Sydney and Bobby Jr. for the 11 years they spent with the program.
The move came hours after Arizona State’s season ended in a blowout that sent the Sun Devils home from the tournament as the last-place seed. The school finished 17-15, a record that reflected a season that began with promise but never found a steady rhythm for long.

That uneven stretch showed up across the schedule. Arizona State finished runner-up at the Maui Invitational and played Gonzaga close, then opened January with home wins over Kansas State and Cincinnati before stumbling through losses to Houston, West Virginia and Arizona. By the time the Big 12 tournament arrived, the run had left the Sun Devils with little margin and no path forward.

Hurley, speaking after the loss, said, “I don’t have any regrets” and added, “I laid it out on the line the best I could every night.” Those words now stand as the final note on a tenure that brought Arizona State consistency, milestone wins and a place near the top of the school’s record book, even as the program chose a different direction before his contract runs out in June.
