Subway riders heading through Grand Central on Saturday found a key Manhattan transfer point suddenly out of reach. Around 10 a.m., the MTA said no uptown or downtown 4, 5 or 6 trains were stopping at Grand Central-42nd Street because of an NYPD investigation at the station.
The disruption hit one of the busiest stops in the system, where the 4, 5 and 6 lines all serve Grand Central-42nd Street. That meant riders had to move around the station while police activity continued above and below the platforms, and trains kept bypassing the stop rather than turning the delay into a longer shutdown.
The timing mattered because the notice came in the middle of the Saturday morning rush, when riders were already moving through Midtown and many were likely counting on the transfer at Grand Central. The MTA did not say how long the bypass would last, and CBS News New York said it had reached out to the NYPD for more information.
For now, the immediate answer is simple: the station was being used as an active police scene, and the 4, 5 and 6 trains were not stopping there while the investigation was underway.
