The Calgary Flames were in Denver on Thursday, April 9, to face the Colorado Avalanche in a game shaped by absences on both sides and a betting profile that has leaned to the low side for much of the season. The Avalanche had gone over the total in only six of their last 25 games, and their season over-under record stood at 33-42-2.
That recent run fits a broader pattern. Five of Colorado's past seven games had finished with six goals or fewer, including three straight, and the team had hit the game total under in 15 of its last 25. The Flames, meanwhile, arrived after trading Nazem Kadri and Rasmus Andersson before the deadline, while Jonathan Huberdeau was already out with an injury. Cale Makar and Nazem Kadri were sidelined for Colorado, leaving both clubs short of some of their most recognizable names.
The personnel losses matter because they strip pace and finishing ability from a matchup that already looked compressed. Todd Cordell said the injuries across both rosters pointed to a defense-first, low-event game and an Under result. That view also lines up with the form of several players expected to help keep shots from reaching the net. Yan Kuznetsov had blocked multiple shots in 15 of his last 20 games and in two of three since returning from injury, while Olli Maatta had blocked at least a couple of pucks in seven of his past 10.

Colorado's betting numbers have reflected that style for weeks. The Avalanche have spent most of the season landing on the Under, and the combination of Makar's absence, the Flames' roster changes and Huberdeau's injury leaves little reason to expect a loose, open game in Denver. If this one follows the numbers, the final score should tell the story before the third period does.
