Karolina Pliskova’s comeback gets a sharper test on Day 4 in Linz, where she is scheduled to meet Ekaterina Alexandrova in one of four more Round of 16 matches. Pliskova is back on court after playing her first match in nearly two months in the previous round, when she beat Aliaksandra Sasnovich.
That win showed she still has enough timing to compete, but Alexandrova asks a similar question in a more punishing form. Her game shares Pliskova’s hard, flat striking, and that makes this matchup feel like a mirror with a higher edge. Both women have won three matches since qualifying, so neither arrives short of momentum. The problem for Pliskova is less about form than about how much of her body is ready for this kind of pace so soon after another injury issue.
The schedule in Linz leaves little room to ease back in. Four more Round of 16 matches were set for Day 4, with Donna Vekic among the other players to have won three matches since qualifying and Anhelina Kalinina a factor despite clay being her best surface. The depth of the field also includes the No. 3 seed, whether Clara Tauson or Samsonova, and the 18-year-old Tagger, who already has an opening-round triumph over Paula Badosa.
For Pliskova, the meeting with Alexandrova looks like the point where a promising return could run into the limits of timing and recovery. If she can absorb the same pace she produces herself, she keeps the draw open. If not, Alexandrova is the sort of opponent who can expose the gap between being back and being ready.
