Brian Harman has long balanced golf with family life, from wife Kelly Van Slyke and three children to a rescue that still resonates.

has built a career that travels far from home, but much of the story around him starts with and their three children. He married Van Slyke in 2014, and since then the family has grown to include daughter , born in 2016, son , born in 2019, and son Jack, born in 2022.

That balance between the road and home came into focus in April 2023, when Harman said he understood what life with small children was like before Jack was born and praised his wife for making it possible for him to concentrate on golf. “She makes it to where I can go out and focus on my golf,” he said, adding that the family travels when it can, but that “sometimes daddy has to go to work.”

The family has often been visible at tournaments, which makes the details of their story feel less like background and more like part of the sport itself. Cooper was there for Harman’s 2017 win, took part in the Par 3 Contest at Augusta National Golf Club in 2018 and Walter has joined Harman and Cooper on the putting green during the Masters Par 3 Contest. The children’s appearances have helped turn the public view of Harman into that of a golfer constantly moving between competition and fatherhood.

Walter’s near-drowning incident at Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, when he was 6 years old, gave that family story a far sharper edge. Harman said Walter was out boogie boarding with a close friend when a rip current pulled him seaward, and he later credited local bystanders, including family friend , with saving his son’s life. Harman was in China for a golf tournament when it happened.

That rescue remained personal enough that Harman brought it up again years later. Nine days before Dowdy died in April 2025, he dedicated his win to her family, thanking the people who entered the water and, in his words, “disregarded their selves” to save his son. For Harman, the connection between golf, travel and family has never been abstract. It has been lived in public, one tournament and one crisis at a time.

What comes next is familiar for Harman: more travel, more family appearances when schedules allow and more evidence that his life in golf still runs through the people waiting at home.
