Swatch and Audemars Piguet unveiled a brand-new collaboration line on Saturday, and the first piece is the Royal Pop, an affordable new take on the Royal Oak that riffs on Swatch’s Pop Watch. The watch goes on sale Saturday, while more will be revealed tomorrow night.
The release arrives with the kind of online frenzy usually reserved for major luxury launches. Price guesses, mock-ups and predictions are already circulating, and the source framing the project says it could become one of the biggest releases of the year. For both brands, that level of attention is the point: the Royal Pop takes one of watchmaking’s most recognizable signatures and recasts it through a format built to feel more playful and accessible.
That approach reaches back to Swatch’s Pop watch, first launched in 1986 as a large 47mm watch with detachable dials that could be clipped onto clothing, a keychain, a bag or whatever else the wearer fancied. Swatch discontinued the line before bringing it back in 2022 in a slightly smaller format, typically with a 45mm case. The original idea sat somewhere between a wearable charm and a watch, and the new collaboration seems to lean into that same spirit.
That matters now because the return of versatile accessories that express wearers’ personalities is resonating with young consumers in the 2020s, giving the Royal Pop a cultural runway beyond the usual watch crowd. The tension is that the collaboration sits between two very different worlds: Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak, the brand’s signature watch, and Swatch’s history of irreverent, changeable design. The question for collectors is no longer whether the concept will get attention. It already has. The real test is whether the Royal Pop can turn online noise into a release people actually line up to buy.
Tomorrow night’s reveal will show how far Swatch and Audemars Piguet are willing to push the concept, but Saturday’s launch already points to the bigger story. This is not just another crossover. It is a luxury-inspired reinvention of a watch that was built, from the start, to be worn with personality.
