John B. Sanfilippo & Son, Inc. is recalling several snack mix products sold under its Fisher, Squirrel Brand and Southern Style Nuts labels, along with a Good & Gather snack mix distributed by Target, over a possible salmonella milk powder contamination. The FDA said Tuesday the company is taking the action as a precaution because the products may contain Salmonella.
The recall covers multiple snack mix products, including five trail mix varieties such as Tex Mex Trail Mix, Gourmet Hunter Mix, Hunter Mix, Travelers Mix and Town & Country Mix. A Good & Gather Mexican Street Corn Trail Mix sold at Target is also included, and the best-by dates on the recalled items extend into 2027.
The issue traces to a seasoning ingredient from a third-party supplier that may have contained contaminated dry milk powder. That ingredient had already been recalled by California Dairies, Inc. The seasoning batches tied to the snack mixes tested negative for salmonella before use, but the company moved ahead with the recall after the supplier link raised concern about possible contamination.
Consumers are being urged not to eat the products and to return them to the place of purchase for a refund or replacement. The warning matters because salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems, with symptoms that typically include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
In rare cases, the infection can spread to the bloodstream and lead to more severe complications. The recall reaches beyond one brand family and into a national retailer’s shelves, which is why the company’s precaution is more than routine housekeeping: it is the safest response to a contamination concern that could still touch products people bought for pantry use and did not expect to worry about until well into 2027.
