Stephen A. Smith fired back at Matt Barnes on Thursday, reopening a feud that had already been simmering between the two men. Smith said he was responding because it was his job, after Barnes posted what he called a disrespectful video about him on social media.
“Y’all employed by the brother [Lebron James]?.. I’m obligated to address the news… It’s my job,” Smith said, adding, “Y’all volunteering. Influencers. I am a reporter…So let me do my job,”
Smith said he was disappointed in the former Memphis Grizzlies player and friend for taking the dispute online instead of having a civil debate about comments LeBron James made about Memphis. The argument matters now because it is tied to remarks that put one of basketball’s most visible personalities at odds with a longtime media figure who has built a career on sharp opinions and public confrontation.

Barnes answered that he understood Memphis from personal experience. “I played in Memphis… got a lot of love for the city, but there’s no doubt it needs an upgrade,” he said, before adding, “But Stephen A., you shouldn’t have a problem with that.” Barnes also accused Smith of broader hypocrisy, saying, “You’ve been… disrespecting Serena Williams, Jasmine Crockett, Kamala Harris, and tap dancing for the whole white Republican Party.” He then pressed the point directly: “But you’ve got an issue with LeBron talking about a trending topic?”
