Christian Lundgaard won the Sonsio Grand Prix on Saturday on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, beating David Malukas by 4.6713 seconds to end a 47-race winless drought.
Lundgaard drove the No. 7 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet to his second career victory, adding to a first win at the Honda Indy Toronto on July 16, 2023. Malukas finished second in the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet, with Graham Rahal third in the No. 15 Fifth Third Bank Honda, Josef Newgarden fourth in the No. 2 Astemo Team Penske Chevrolet and Alex Palou fifth in the No. 10 DHL Chip Ganassi Racing Honda.
The 85-lap race on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course was full of incidents and enough pit wall decisions to prematurely age strategists, a messy contest that opened the door for Lundgaard to take control when it mattered most. Palou entered the race after winning the NTT P1 Award and had led every session he was on track this weekend, but he could not turn that speed into a victory on race day.
For Lundgaard, the result was both a breakthrough and a release. After 47 races without a win, he finally returned to Victory Lane with a drive that left little doubt and put him back among the race winners for the first time since Toronto.
