Jeremy Doku turned a tight first half into a clear Manchester City win on Saturday evening, scoring early after the break before Erling Haaland and Omar Marmoush added goals in a 3-0 victory over Brentford. City, who began the night five points behind Arsenal with one game in hand, needed only one sharp burst to take control.
Doku had been the most active City player down the left in the opening half, but the match was still 0-0 at halftime. Brentford, who started in eighth place and were trying to move toward European qualification, had their moments too. After 15 minutes, a Jensen free kick became dangerous for Gianluigi Donnarumma, and after about 20 minutes City began to settle into the game.
The decisive spell came early in the second half. Doku collected the ball and drove a shot into the far corner and into the top corner to put City ahead. Brentford then had a dangerous effort of their own when Igor Thiago forced a save from Donnarumma. The visitors also appealed for a penalty after 71 minutes, but the referee did not award one, and Haaland made it 2-0 shortly after Doku’s opener.
There was still late pressure at both ends. After 82 minutes, Phil Foden missed from close range and Kelleher made a strong save, before Marmoush scored in stoppage time to complete the 3-0 result. The finish left City with a straightforward message on the scoreboard and a sharper one in the table race: the pressure on Arsenal remains real, and the margin for error at the top is getting smaller.
Brentford had come in compact and difficult to play against, and they were still hoping a result could keep their European push moving, even though the exact Premier League places for continental qualification were not yet fixed. For City, the night belonged to Doku first. His pace and direct running broke open a match that had been stubborn for nearly an hour, and once he found the corner, the outcome quickly followed.
