Junior Barranquilla opened its 2026 Copa Libertadores campaign against Palmeiras on Wednesday, April 8, in Cartagena, with both clubs starting Group F knowing there is little margin for error. The Colombian side came in after a weekend loss at home, while Palmeiras arrived as the early favorite in the section that also includes Cerro Porteño and Sporting Cristal.
The match carried immediate weight for Junior because it had won the Torneo Finalización last season to claim one of Colombia's four places in the tournament, but its domestic form has been uneven. Junior had eight wins, one draw and six defeats through 15 rounds of the league early in 2026 and sat fifth with 25 points after a 2-1 home defeat to Deportivo Cali. It had also gone three of its last five home matches without a win, though it did have some recent encouragement in Libertadores openers, drawing with Santa Fe in 2021 and beating Botafogo at home in 2024.
Palmeiras reached Cartagena after a very different run. The Brazilian club returned to the Libertadores after finishing runners-up last year, when it lost 1-0 to Flamengo in Lima, and it beat Bahia 2-1 on Sunday, April 6. It had won eight of its ten Brasileirão matches in 2026 and led São Paulo by five points, while also taking the Campeonato Paulista final in early March 2026 by defeating Novorizontino. Coach Abel Ferreira was in his seventh campaign in South America's premier club competition, with two titles from 2020 and 2021, and a record of 62 Libertadores matches, 41 wins, 14 draws and seven losses.
The clubs last met in the 2019 group stage, when Palmeiras won both matches, which made the opener in Cartagena more than a routine first-round fixture. Junior leaned on Luis Muriel, its top scorer in 2026, and on experienced names such as 40-year-old striker Teófilo Gutiérrez and Yimmi Chará, who previously played for Atlético-MG. Palmeiras, meanwhile, had Jhon Arias, who joined in January and had scored in three of the team's last four matches. The result in Cartagena would set the tone for a Group F race that leaves little room for slow starts.
