The optioned to on Friday, sending him back after he served as the club’s 27th man for Thursday’s doubleheader with the Phillies.

McDonald did not get into either game, going unused out of the bullpen as San Francisco split the roster for the twin bill. He will continue to work out of the rotation in Sacramento, where he had been before the temporary call-up.

The move fits the brief and specific job he had with the Giants: he was up only for the doubleheader roster spot. Once Thursday ended, there was no further need to keep him on the major league staff, and the organization sent him back to the place where he was already building innings.

That leaves McDonald exactly where the Giants said he would be next, back in Triple-A and back in the rotation, waiting for the next time his name is needed for a short-term roster move.
