Universidad Católica visits Barcelona de Ecuador on Wednesday at 20:00 in the third date of the Copa Libertadores, a match that carries real weight for the Ecuadorian side's hopes of staying alive in the group. The game arrives with a familiar cast of names on both benches and in both club histories, the kind of overlap that gives a routine group-stage fixture an extra edge.
Jaime Pizarro is one of the clearest links. He had a brief and discreet spell at Barcelona de Ecuador in 1994, then joined Universidad Católica in 1997 and retired there in 1999 after helping the club win the Apertura title. Damián Díaz followed a similar path in reverse: he arrived at Universidad Católica from Boca Juniors in 2009, stayed on loan for twelve months, and left in mid-2010 before signing for Barcelona de Ecuador in July 2011. Known as "Kitu," Díaz became an idol in Guayaquil, earned Ecuadorian nationality and even played for the national team. He now plays for Guayaquil FC.
The shared history does not stop there. Ariel Holan won the 2020 title with Universidad Católica during one of his two spells at the club, then later arrived at Barcelona de Ecuador after his second run with Católica. His stay in Ecuador lasted only a few months. Rubén Capria played for Barcelona de Ecuador in the second half of 2003 before arriving at Universidad Católica in 2004 for a one-semester stint. Ricardo Tito Noir also moved between the two sides, going on loan to Barcelona from Boca Juniors in 2010 and then joining Universidad Católica on loan in 2016, where he stayed for one year.
Eduard Bello is another recent bridge between the clubs, having arrived at Universidad Católica on loan directly from Barcelona de Ecuador before ending his link with both sides at the end of last year. One player who never crossed that line is Clemente Montes, despite repeated interest from Barcelona de Ecuador. The club made offers that were rejected by his entourage, including a bid in June 2024 when Holan was in charge and Cruzados judged the proposal insufficient. That unresolved pursuit hangs over this meeting, but the facts on the field are simpler: Universidad Católica arrives needing points, and Barcelona de Ecuador knows exactly how many former faces this fixture can still put in front of it.
