Derek Dixon entered the transfer portal on April 7, 2026, hours after reports leaked that Carolina Athletics was planning to hire former Denver Nuggets head coach Michael Malone for the same role in Chapel Hill. Dixon and his agency announced the move on social media just after the NCAA men’s basketball transfer portal opened the day after the national championship game.
The move closes a season in which Dixon became UNC’s starting point guard under Hubert Davis in 2025-26 and gave the Heels steady production when they needed it most. He averaged 6.5 points and 2.3 rebounds per game, while his free-throw and three-point shooting ranked among the best on the team. He also made clutch plays in big wins, including a go-ahead three that helped swing one of North Carolina’s top victories.
Dixon’s exit adds another name to a UNC roster that has already seen several Tar Heels enter the portal or be reported as headed there. Davis was dismissed on March 24, and the program has been moving through a fast-turnover stretch as roster decisions pile up and coaching plans continue to shift in Chapel Hill.

The timing of Dixon’s announcement underscores how quickly the portal window can reshape a roster once it opens. His departure comes on a day when North Carolina’s offseason direction was already being recalibrated by reports of Malone’s expected arrival, turning the first hours of portal season into another hard reset for the Tar Heels.
