John Stones will leave Manchester City when his contract expires at the end of this season, ending a 10-year spell that helped define the club’s most successful era. Stones announced the move on his Instagram account, and City later confirmed he would depart after a decade at the Etihad.
Stones said the club has been his home for the past 10 years and will be his home for the rest of his life, a farewell that underlined how deeply he is tied to the team. During that time, he won 19 major trophies with City and was central to the 2022-23 treble-winning season, when Pep Guardiola used him as a centre-back out of possession and a midfielder in possession.
His influence was especially clear in the 2023 Champions League final, when he played a key role in City’s 1-0 win over Inter Milan. That match completed the treble and confirmed Stones as one of Guardiola’s most important tactical pieces, even as injuries have taken a toll in recent seasons.
Stones’ departure adds to a steady turnover of senior figures in the City squad in recent seasons, with Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan, Ederson and Kyle Walker among those who have also moved on. Bernardo Silva is also set to leave at the end of this season, leaving City with another notable exit as it continues to reshape the team that dominated English and European football.
For Stones, the legacy is already fixed: a decade at City, 19 trophies and a place in the club’s modern history that will outlast the final whistle on his contract.
