Sanderson Border Patrol agents arrested three people after stopping a vehicle north of Sanderson on April 25, according to Sheriff Thaddeus Cleveland. The stop ended with two undocumented immigrants and a U.S. citizen in custody.
Cleveland said in a Facebook post that the arrests happened during the vehicle stop, and that the U.S. citizen was trying to smuggle the two undocumented immigrants. The case puts a quick end to this crossing attempt, but it also shows how often smuggling cases in West Texas begin with a routine traffic stop and end with federal custody.
The arrest came on a day when Border Patrol activity in the area drew immediate attention because the stop took place north of Sanderson, the county seat in the Big Bend region. Cleveland’s post gave the first public account of what agents found and who they arrested.
What matters next is the federal case that follows, including how prosecutors handle the allegations against the U.S. citizen and the immigration status of the two people arrested with him. The stop was brief, but the consequences will not be.
