Jamal Shead was not in the Toronto Raptors’ starting lineup for Game 3 against Cleveland on Thursday, a rotation tweak that sent Ja'Kobe Walter into the first five instead. Serena Winters of FanDuel Sports Network Ohio reported the move before tipoff.
The change came after Shead scored three points on 1-for-5 shooting from beyond the arc in Game 2, a sharp drop from Game 1, when he caught fire from deep. The Raptors’ playoff adjustment comes with the series already moving fast and every possession carrying added weight.
That is why the lineup switch mattered on Thursday. Toronto turned to Shead early in the series when Immanuel Quickley was out for Game 1, and he answered with a hot shooting night that helped earn him a larger role. But the production did not carry over two nights later, and the move to Walter was framed as a direct response to Shead’s Game 2 line.
The tension in Toronto’s decision is simple: Shead had already shown he could change a game from the perimeter, but the Raptors opted to change course after one quiet outing against Cleveland. Walter got the nod for Game 3, and Toronto is now asking a different starting group to set the tone in a series where every lineup choice is under a microscope.
For Shead, the next answer is on the court. If his shot returns, the Raptors may have reason to go back to him quickly; if not, Walter’s start could become more than a one-game adjustment.
