Sporting Lisbon visit already-relegated AVS on 26 April 2026 needing a clean response to a run that has left them chasing from behind in the Primeira Liga. The visitors are without a victory in their last three matches in all competitions and have won only one of their last five.
That sequence includes a 2-1 loss to Benfica in last weekend's Lisbon derby at Estadio Jose Alvalade, even as Sporting remain one point behind second-placed Benfica and eight points off the summit with a game in hand. Midweek brought some relief, with a 0-0 draw at Porto at Estadio do Dragao sending Sporting into the Taca de Portugal final after a 1-0 first-leg win in March.
The numbers explain why the league campaign has turned tense. Sporting have failed to score in three of their last five matches, yet they still lead the division with 74 goals. That imbalance has become harder to ignore as the title race tightens and the margin for error shrinks, especially with more decisive games still to come.
AVS offer a different picture. Their draw at Rio Ave last weekend, after they fell behind and then moved in front through Tomane and Pedro Lima, confirmed the end of their two-year stay in the top flight. They sit bottom, 13 points adrift of the playoff place with four games left, and have only one league win this season.
The home side have also suffered 19 defeats, the most in the division, and have conceded 64 goals, also the worst defensive record in the league. At the other end, they have scored 21, the joint-fewest in the competition. They have lost nine of 15 home league matches and were beaten 6-0 in the reverse fixture against Sporting this season, although their only previous home meeting with the Lisbon side ended 2-2 at Estadio do CD Aves.
For Sporting, the trip to AVS is about more than three points. It is a chance to stop the slide before it becomes a deeper problem, and to keep the pressure on Benfica while balancing a cup final still to come. For AVS, the final four matches are now about pride, not survival.
