Dino Prizmic delivered the first major upset of the Mutua Madrid Open on Friday, outlasting Ben Shelton 6-4, 6-7, 7-6 in a three-hour battle to reach the third round in a Masters 1000 for the first time.
The 20-year-old came through qualifying in Madrid, then beat Matteo Berrettini in the opening round before backing up that run against Shelton, the tournament's fourth seed and world No. 6. It was Prizmic's first career victory over a Top 10 player, a result that rewrote the shape of the draw in one afternoon.
Shelton arrived in Madrid on the back of the Munich title, and the setting seemed built for him. Madrid's altitude and fast balls were expected to suit his game, which made the loss harder to explain and more significant for the rest of the field. Prizmic had barely won a main draw match at events of this level before this week, which is what made Friday feel less like a breakthrough than a leap.
The match turned on small margins in the final set tiebreak, where Prizmic held steady long enough to finish the job. For Shelton, it is a sharp early exit after a title run in Munich. For Prizmic, it is the kind of win that changes a week, a ranking of expectations and, for the first time, his place in a Masters 1000 draw.
