Reading Terminal Market is No. 1 again. The Philadelphia landmark took the top spot in a poll, reclaiming a title it had last held in 2022 and earning its third win since the category began in 2021.
The result matters because the market has finished in the Top 10 every year since the ranking started. It had been overtaken for the past two years by the Milwaukee Public Market, but readers sent Reading Terminal back to the top this year, underscoring the pull of a place that has long been more than a food hall.
Mayor Cherelle Parker welcomed the news with a grin, saying she was “thrilled and proud” and telling that “we all know” what the market means to the city. At the center food court, a flash mob broke out to mark the win, and the Famous 4th Street Cookie Company handed out fresh treats to customers celebrating the result.
That reaction fit the way market leaders framed the honor: not as a judge’s panel award, but as a vote from people who have made memories there. Reading Terminal, recognized as the nation’s oldest public market, has become a Philadelphia cultural landmark as much as a shopping stop, and the timing gave the win extra weight in the run-up to the 250th anniversary of America.
Beth Esposito said the market is “a focal point of the Philadelphia culture” and called it meaningful to be part of that story during the 250th anniversary year. Jake Riehl said the victory was deserved, adding that the food is unlike anything else at a market. The ranking suggests the city’s oldest public market is still speaking to a new generation, and this year’s readers made clear they were ready to put it back on top.
