Pittsburgh used its first front-seven pick of the 2026 NFL Draft on Gabriel Rubio, taking the Notre Dame defensive tackle at No. 210 overall in the sixth round. The Steelers added interior depth to their defensive line after trading back earlier in the draft and waited until late Saturday to address the spot.
Rubio comes to Pittsburgh at 6-foot-5 and 321 pounds and arrives with a name familiar to the franchise. His father, Angel Rubio, was selected by the Steelers in the seventh round of the 1998 NFL Draft out of Southeastern Missouri State, though he never played a regular season game for the team.
The pick also ends a quiet draft for Pittsburgh’s front seven. Before Rubio, the Steelers had not chosen a single player for that part of the defense, a notable pause for a roster-building process that usually leans on speed and depth up front. By the time they turned to him, the team had already moved down from No. 161 to No. 169 in a fifth-round trade with the Kansas City Chiefs, a deal that helped set up the No. 210 selection.
Rubio signed with Notre Dame as part of its 2021 recruiting class and entered college as a four-star recruit. Over 39 games, he finished with 66 tackles, 1.5 sacks and one forced fumble. Those numbers do not shout, but they fit what the Steelers appeared to be buying late in the draft: size, experience and a body that can hold up inside.
The family connection gives the selection a little extra edge, but the football case is straightforward. Pittsburgh needed another body on the interior, and Rubio gives it one with power, length and a college résumé that suggests he can compete for a role. After waiting until the sixth round to take a front-seven player, the Steelers left themselves with fewer opportunities to add another one, making Rubio’s path into the roster conversation one of the draft’s more practical late moves.
